Many people have experienced tinnitus at one time or another. It is a ringing in the ears when there are not actually sound waves present. Tinnitus is not only a ringing in the ears, but the ringing noise is the most common. One will hear these noises, and at times the ringing can even block out other sounds in the room. Because of that, it can be a real problem. There are many people that are not able to hear what is going on around them because of tinnitus. Tinnitus can be caused by many different things. One such cause is an ear infection. Many people will experience tinnitus when they have an ear infection. After the ear infection is gone, the tinnitus will typically go away. A buildup of fluids or wax inside of the ear can also lead to tinnitus. In addition, those who have been exposed to loud noises can end up with tinnitus. In almost all cases, tinnitus is subjective, meaning that it can only be heard by the person who is experiencing it. However, there are some cases in which the physician can actually hear the tinnitus. When tinnitus is objective, it is often due to a spasm in the ear. While this does occur, most cases of tinnitus are only heard by the person experiencing them, and thus cannot adequately be measured. Even though tinnitus cannot adequately be measured in most cases, it is a very real problem. It occurs mostly in industrialized countries, as there tends to be more noise that can cause problems with the ear. By understanding the root of tinnitus, many people can keep it from occurring over and over again. For example, those who experience it during loud concerts can wear earplugs at the concerts they attend to prevent it. Those who experience tinnitus need to look at ways to prevent it so they do not do real damage to their hearing. For more hearing loss information or to learn more about treatment for tinnitus it's best to consult an experienced audiologist.
